FilmCraft in the Browser: The WebAssembly Build Explained
Updated 2026-10-12
FilmCraft has a browser version. The README says the same engine and UI run in a browser via WebAssembly, and every release ships a filmcraft-web zip - a static site you can host anywhere.
It is not a hosted service you open from a link: you serve the files yourself.
How the web build works
- The project lives in apps/filmcraft-web and is documented in docs/web.md.
- Each release includes filmcraft-web-<version>.zip: unzip it and serve it from any static server.
- Run it locally with the project's xtask web command, or host the folder on a static host.
What to expect
Browser builds run inside the browser sandbox, so file access, hardware codecs and background rendering are more limited than the native app. Treat the web build as a way to try the interface and do light editing, and use the native build for real projects.
If you just need a clip right now
Hosting a static site is more than most people want to do for a quick clip. If you need a short piece of footage in the browser from a prompt or a still image, the AI clip maker on this site renders a 5-second clip with sound and gives you an MP4 you can drop into FilmCraft.
