FilmCraft on Linux

Install FilmCraft on Linux

FilmCraft publishes AppImage, Flatpak, .deb, .rpm and tarball builds for x86_64 and aarch64, plus a riscv64 tarball and a FreeBSD x86_64 tarball.

What is supported

  • x86_64 and aarch64 as AppImage, Flatpak, deb, rpm or tarball.
  • riscv64 as a tarball only; FreeBSD x86_64 tarball.
  • Hardware decode on Linux; Linux gets less testing than macOS.

Steps

  1. 01Pick a format

AppImage needs no install, Flatpak sandboxes the app, deb and rpm integrate with your package manager, tarballs cover other architectures.

  2. 02Verify the checksum

Compare the download with SHA256SUMS.txt from the release.

    sha256sum ./filmcraft-download.AppImage
  3. 03Make AppImage executable

Mark it executable and run it.

    chmod +x ./filmcraft-download.AppImage && ./filmcraft-download.AppImage
  4. 04Or build from source

Install the Rust toolchain, clone the repo and build the release profile.

    git clone https://github.com/storytold/filmcraft
    cd filmcraft
    cargo run --release -p filmcraft

Troubleshooting

Which architecture do I need?
Run uname -m. x86_64 is a normal 64-bit PC, aarch64 is 64-bit Arm. riscv64 only has a tarball.
Hardware decode does not kick in
Hardware decode depends on your GPU driver stack. Software decode still works; expect slower playback on large footage.
