Premiere Pro Alternatives: Free and Open-Source Video Editors

Updated 2026-10-12

If the subscription is the problem, you have real options. This is a quick map of the main free Premiere Pro alternatives and where the new open-source FilmCraft fits among them.

The shortlist

  • FilmCraft - open source, Premiere-style layout, alpha, scriptable.
  • DaVinci Resolve - free tier with deep colour and finishing; proprietary.
  • Kdenlive - mature open-source multitrack editor.
  • Shotcut - lightweight open-source editor for quick cuts.
  • OpenShot - beginner-friendly open-source editor.

How to choose

  • Need stability this week: Resolve or Kdenlive.
  • Want the Premiere feel and shortcuts without Adobe: FilmCraft.
  • Want something quick and light: Shotcut or OpenShot.

Moving existing work

None of these open .prproj files directly. Export FCPXML, EDL or AAF where your workflow allows, and check which interchange formats the target editor imports.
