FilmCraft Review: An Honest Look at the Open-Source Editor
Updated 2026-10-12
FilmCraft arrived in October 2026 as part of a burst of open-source Adobe alternatives. Here is a sober read of what the project itself says it can and cannot do. This is based on the README and release notes, not on a lab test.
What stands out
- A real Premiere-shaped workflow: three-point editing, trim tools, workspaces and shortcuts.
- Serious interchange: FCPXML, OpenTimelineIO, EDL, AAF and OMF - you can move cuts in and out.
- Open and scriptable: CLI, JSON control channel and MCP server are unusual for an editor.
- Fast iteration: five tagged releases in a week.
What blocks real work
- No .prproj import, no plug-in hosting (VST3, AU, OpenFX).
- H.264-only software export and CPU-bound colour, keying and export.
- Real-world camera and phone files are less tested; Windows and Linux are less tested than macOS.
- It is alpha: expect bugs, and keep a fallback editor for deadlines.
Who should try it now
- Editors who want to evaluate an open Premiere-style tool without a subscription.
- People assembling short social edits or AI-generated clips.
- Developers who want a scriptable editor.
Who should wait
- Anyone with a .prproj archive or a plug-in-dependent pipeline.
- Teams that need H.265/AV1 delivery from software export.
- Deadline-driven client work with no fallback.
Verdict
Promising and moving fast, not yet a Premiere replacement. Test it on a copy of a real project: three clips, one music track, trim, play back, export - and judge from your own footage.
