FilmCraft vs Shotcut: Lightweight Open-Source Editors Compared

Updated 2026-10-12

Shotcut is a lightweight, established open-source editor that is popular for quick cuts. FilmCraft is a new, broader attempt at a full Premiere-style workflow.

Scope

Shotcut aims at being light and approachable. FilmCraft aims much higher - a full Premiere-style feature set including colour with scopes, mixer automation and interchange formats - which is also why it is less stable today.

Interchange and formats

FilmCraft documents FCPXML, OpenTimelineIO, EDL, AAF and OMF interchange and a broad codec list. If you need to hand cuts to or from other editors, check the formats page.

Which to pick

  • Quick, reliable cuts on modest hardware: Shotcut.
  • Premiere-style layout, colour scopes and interchange, and willing to test an alpha: FilmCraft.

Quick answers

Which is easier for beginners?
Shotcut is the established, approachable option. FilmCraft assumes familiarity with Premiere-style editing.
